GEAR MAINTENANCE: PUNCTURES

Punctures

Nobody likes a puncture in their backpack, but thankfully there are products on the market that can resolve the issue with so little effort you won’t have time to get upset.

My favorite product for the job is called Tenacious Tape by Gear Aid. It’s extremely simple to use and it comes in a bunch of different colors (or clear) to compliment or match your backpack.

Before I get into the easy repair process, I’ll start with a bit of a background on our shell material and its Ripstop feature. The idea behind Ripstop is for those unfortunate incidents when your shell gets punctured by abrasion, a rogue branch or caught on the sharp object like a rock’s edge.

Cut, peel and patch... It's that easy

The grid pattern traps the punctures within its grid walls and prevents it from growing. Of course, if the puncture has more force than the walls have strength- it will tear past it. But it will still help slow down the energy that is tearing your packs shell.

Tenacious Tape is a very low denier Ripstop Nylon, with a tough adhesive on the underside.

It works just like tape, so just peel it back and apply it over the damaged area. Of course like all of our maintenance tips – clean the working area first!

The product is Nylon, so it exhibits a conforming flexibility and becomes ‘one’ with your pack’s shell instantly. You can barely feel it has been applied.

It’s that simple.

The right side image shows the clear 'color' on both Black and Green shell materials. It is barely noticeable.

Another reason I like Tenacious Tape is because I can add little elements to customize my pack and other soft goods. Whether labels, design flare, or maybe you just want to stand out from other guys with the same Shimoda pack.

Tenacious Tape a great tool for any outdoor adventurer.
